Now, again your confused and this time it is about choosing the right thermometer. Did I guess it right?

Yes, you will feel perplexed to select the thermometer correctly, as well using it in the right manner. You will also want to understand the difference between adult and kids thermometer.

To help you understand all the basics of a thermometer, we have listed the best baby thermometer 2020 and also have explained why they are good. Additionally, we have provided some education about thermometers that are required to be known by every parent.

Thermometers and its types

Earlier mercury thermometer was the trend and was used by everyone. But nowadays it is not suggested, because the glass breaks easily and the mercury can be spilled out, which is dangerous when inhaled. Consider the following options when you want to buy a thermometer.

  • Digital thermometers – These are an electronic device that measures body temperature with the help of electronic heat sensors. These thermometers are used to check the temperature in the rectum, mouth, and armpit. We cannot trust this device totally for armpit temperature as it seems to be least accurate among others.
  • Ear thermometers – With the help of the latest infrared technology, these thermometers are used to measure inside ear temperature in the tympanic membrane. It may show wrong reading if any disturbance is caused due to earwax or the ear canal being curved while noting the temperature.
  • Temporal artery thermometers – Forehead temperature is measured using the infrared scanner. It can be switched to mute mode, so the temperature can be checked without bothering the child even when he is sleeping.
  • Pacifier thermometers can be infectious, so it’s better to avoid its use.

Safety tips

  • Read all the user manual instructions carefully before using the thermometer.
  • Make sure its tip is appropriately cleaned.
  • Try to use different thermometers for different uses. For example. If you use one thermometer to measure rectal, then get a new one for your oral use.
  • To avoid confusion, label your thermometer with the purpose for which it is used.
  • Stay around when your child is holding the thermometer while checking the temperature as a safety measure, the baby might touch it or put it in the mouth. It can be infectious to the baby.

Age guidelines

The type and uses of thermometer vary according to the age of your child. So it’s better to select the thermometer after understanding its description and suitability to your child’s age.

  • Up to 3 months from birth: The digital thermometer is suitable for measuring the rectum temperature of newborns. Even the temporal artery thermometers can be used to get accurate readings.
  • 100 days after birth to 4 yrs: By this age, you can measure the rectal or armpit temperature using a digital thermometer or temporal artery thermometer. A digital ear thermometer is suitable for the baby above the age of 6 months, so you have to wait until your toddler turns to that age. If you are using some other thermometer and are not sure about the accuracy, then you can confirm by checking for rectum temperature
  • Above 4 years. Use an oral thermometer when your child becomes aware of holding the digital thermometer in the mouth. A digital thermometer can similarly be used to take armpit temperature. Other types of thermometer such as temporal or digital ear thermometer, can be used for other purposes.

How to read

· Rectal temperature. While using the thermometer to check the rectal temperature, firstly turn on the thermometer and apply petroleum jelly on the tip. Make your baby sleep on his back and lift the baby’s legs and insert the tip of the thermometer half to one inch inside the rectum.

You can even make your baby sleep on the tummy and initiate the same process. But make sure you hold the baby firmly on the lower back to avoid inaccuracy. Hold the thermometer in its place without putting any pressure and wait for its signal.

· Oral temperature. To check the oral temperature, place a thermometer tip under the tongue of your child and tell him to hold it and keep the mouth closed until the signal is received. Wait for the child to rest for a minimum of 15 minutes after food when using an oral thermometer.

Additional Details about Thermometer

The right way to use the thermometer

Temperature can be measured for kids from different places in the body, namely, armpit, temporal artery, etc.

  • Armpit – The digital thermometer should be turned on. The thermometer, when placed under your child’s armpit, it should touch the skin and not only his clothing. When the reading process is on, hold the thermometer beside your chest by hugging your child. Wait until you get the indication from the thermometer that it is done. After that, check the reading.
  • Ear – Start by turning on the thermometer. Put the thermometer slightly in your child’s ear. Read all the instructions properly on how to place the thermometer inside your child’s ear away from the ear canal. Gently position it and wait to record the temperature.
  • Temporal artery – First turn on the thermometer. Take it and put it gently in your child’s forehead. This will not take that long. Remove it and make a note of the readings.

At the time of consulting doctor provide the reading and explain the method in which you observed the temperature.

The right time to consult a doctor

Fever is common among all the illness, but it is not a great concern many times. In case of older children completing 6 months of age or more and if he is drinking lots of fluids, then treating fever is not required as it will subside on its own. If he is playing well and also sleeping on time, it is a really lovely thing. However, for kids younger than 6 months, provide them Tylenol. If your child is only about 3 months old, then the prescription of any medication should be prevented and the best is to consult a doctor.

When your child is above 6 months, ibuprofen is also okay if the dose is in control. Aspirin should never be an option for those who are below 18 years of age. You can know if your child has a fever with the following symptoms:

  1. Has temp of 100.4 degrees or higher in either ear, rectal, or armpit.
  2. If the oral temperature is 100-degree F or higher.
  3. The temperature of the armpit is 100F or higher.

The temperature may vary at times. Before checking with a doctor, try out other methods also for older children.

The doctor should be consulted if:

  1. The temperature of the child in the rectum is 100.4F or higher in case if the baby is below 3 months old.
  2. If the child is between 3 months and 6 months of age and he has any kind of irritation or feeling uncomfortable at times, then a doctor can be checked. The temperature should be 100F or higher.
  3. If the child is between 6 months and 24 months of age, he has not shown any sign of improvement in the entire day. If your child is suffering from cough and cold, then you can check with a doctor to know if there are other signs of severity as well.

Finally, we would suggest you keep this article as a guide and choose the best thermometer for the baby to provide care to your kids.
